Aizome (indigo dyeing) experience Experience and learn about our fascinating organic aizome culture while admiring the stunning sky and ocean of Kaiyo. Our indigo dye is created with organic “sukumo” (fermented ai or Japanese indigo plant leaves) made in the town of Kamiita (Tokushima prefecture), Japan’s leading production site of ai. We use the centuries-old lye-fermentation method, which involves combining naturally sourced ingredients such as wood and shellfish ash, wheat bran and sake with sukumo, in order to activate microorganisms and the fermentation process.
Attached to our waterfront aizome studio is a space for healing and rejuvenation, featuring indigo colored décor. Our salon symbolizes the ocean and sky through the organic indigo painted doors, custom glass lighting inspired by ocean waves and indigo-dyed, locally sourced cedar panels in the flooring and ceiling. This space can be utilized for healing and natural therapies such as massage. * Please contact us for further details.
We serve a range of specialty sweets and organic Amabe-ai tea (brewed with leaves from ai plants grown in Kaiyo), as well as boutique coffee and alcoholic beverages.
We offer a range of products including aizome dyed and organic hemp/cotton clothing, boutique baby goods by “awaii,” surf gear including the “Kukai-ai” surfboard co-produced with 303SURFBOARDS, hand-towels, accessories and more. In addition, we regularly hold workshops and exhibitions involving artists and brands that use natural and unique materials to create works centered on themes of the sky and the color blue.
